As I was watching the local news in Mexico….
I could not agree more that some panic has been created with the overflow information about violence in Mexico. We have to remind our selves that violent areas exist all over the world, even back home, and that we do not necessarily have to be in the middle of it. The same happens in Mexico. The places mentioned in the news are margin areas and close to the border where most of the cartel trades happen; even locals stay away from these areas.
Geographically Los Cabos, La Paz, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Acapulco, Manzanillo, Cancun, are far from the areas mention in the news. Our tourist destinations are safe places to travel, to visit, to live!!
We do appreciate the facts that government is looking out for the safety of our people, but the information is being misled and making it look like our entire Country is Unsafe and this is so far from the truth. All of our tourist destination places are multicultural places, people from different countries and local conform our entire community, this immediately put us aside from the rest of the Country, you will find fellow Americans, Canadians and Mexicans living together and making of Cabo San Lucas one of the most popular and safe places to visit around the world!!
Picture your self getting in to that flight that is going to bring you directly to Paradise, checking in your favorite resort and sinking your first tropical drink!! Most likely a MARGARITA ON THE ROCKS!!! And trully realize that you are in a different world, where you can truly enjoy your own thoughts and not consumed about all the crazy news all over the place!!!

Great article Karla,
Here in La Paz, we could not be further removed from the reported violence that we see on the news. I think that the warnings that are being reported now regarding the spring break are exaggerated.
Thanks for presenting real information about southern Baja. La Paz is about as peaceful a place as you can find. Watch a beautiful sunset every night!

Well I couldn’t agree more with Rory I would definitely not put our precious and lovely tip of the Baja Peninsula in the same pigeon hole as Tijuana and other troubled cities. I remember when my mother was living here in Cabo and me in Mexico City in 2004 and she would call us and ask if we were doing ok???, and I would ask, “why do you ask, Mom?”, she said, “because it’s all over the News that it is really bad over there!”, I said, “what?, we are perfectly fine mother, don’t listen to that junk the news agencies love having, so people get glued to their newschannel to get more audience!, we just stay out of problem areas, and that’s that!”
Like Rory said, we at the Baja tip, this is the whole Southern Baja State is really so nice and peaceful. We pray that the Federal Governmet quiets down those hot spots in other parts of Mexico, but here at Baja we are very blessed to be people surrounded with hard-working people, always striving to bring out the best for our precious tourits. We live on the airplane route from the airport and have planes passing all the time. Tourism is doing ok here. Tourists go to the beach, rent cars, enjoy the sun and walk our beaches care-free.
I thank Karla Casillas for allowing us to chip in and give you peace of mind.

I think is best to say what’s actually happening and not to emphasise on what’s not, for example here’s what I really think is happening in Cabo:
“We’re having tons of fun, endless sunny days, the usual Margarita, friendly people, gorgeous places to visit, zillions of activities, relax, party, world class cuisine, here and there a celebrity, great shopping places, fabulous venues/hotels, amazing vendors… another Margarita… and yes, sometimes minor incidents like anywhere else in the world”.

Leaving and working in San Jose, BCS Mexico is the best you can experience.Baja is a safe and charming place and people comes to enjoy and relax, far from what news are saying. That´s why I wanted to share with all of you a comment we received from one of our guests staying at Casa Natalia that far from experinece vioence as mentioned, they loved San Jose del Cabo in Baja Mexico:
San Jose del Cabo is my favorite town in Baja, and Casa Natalia is my favorite hotel in Mexico. Sitting on the patio, either at the room or outside the lobby, the breeze through the palms and the sound of the waterfalls totally block out all urban noise, providing a wonderful place to read and rest.

In an effort to summarize various security reports that have been released by our local law enforcement offices, the Mexican hotel association, the state developers association, the local tourism board and the federal and state security administrations, we have the following information to provide you as a tourist traveling to our beloved Los Cabos.
As we are sure you have seen all over the news in the USA and Canada, there is currently a large surge by the Mexican military to control and ultimately shut down the drug cartels in Mexico. Our new president Calderon has committed to follow through with this monumental task. We all applaud his stance on this issue, and we are so proud to see someone finally standing up to these terrible organizations.
A couple of things that need to be remembered are that not only the fact that many of these organizations have been in place and doing business for many decades, the USA is the largest and best “customer” for these cartels. This makes for some very delicate negotiations.
More progress has been made in the past few months, than has been made in the past many years. The best thing that can happen at this point is for as much publicity as possible to happen all over the world, and let everyone see what is happening so as to expose the criminals. Mexico has much support from the USA on this issue and the more everyone knows about this problem, the more quickly it will be controlled.
Not only is all of this very good news for Mexico in general, there is more good news in regards to Los Cabos. Cabo has been held basically completely harmless from all of this mess. As we are sure you are aware, 99% of the problems associated with these cartels has been happening in the border areas and a couple large cities on the mainland.
As Cabo residents, we have always felt that our state of Baja California Sur is very separate and very different from the mainland. We have been blessed with a much different culture and a fresh new start in the tourism industry. New marinas, new airports, some of the most exclusive and luxurious hotels in the world combined with huge infrastructure and many new “Mega-projects” with “Mega” international investment have made Cabo as safe and secure as any place in the world.
As with any large city or rapidly growing destination, normal precautions have to be taken. Walking late at night is not suggested. Take a taxi after 10:00 PM. Take care when out late at night, as the famous Cabo party scene can attract some strange characters in the wee hours of the morning, just as in any city. Refrain from any type of confrontation with locals or other tourists. You are a guest in this country and fighting or consumption of too much alcohol or controlled substances is frowned upon by the authorities. 99.9% of the time, these are the only types of problems or endangerment that you may see while on vacation here.
You will be safe here if these simple rules are followed. 2009 has been a record breaking year thus far for Cabo Villas Beach Resort and Spa. Our new installations, new world class spa, the new Bayview Suites tower and our new Beach Club have put us in a completely new league.

Here at Morgans Restaurants we would like to thank Karla for her efforts in trying to inform the foreign public about the security situation here in Los Cabos.
As Canadian Citizens living in Los Cabos since over 10 years our honest impression is that sadly there is a kind of witch hunt going on in the US media that intentionally or not is scaring people from coming south of the border.
Certainly there is very dangerous places along the border to the US and drug traffickers have launched vicious assaults in many border towns like Cuidad Juarez, but sadly this has been creating a generalized but false perception that all of Mexico is unsafe to go to.
This is especially surprising to local residents originally from north the border that know exactly that the violate crime rate in this state of Baja California Sur and of the Los Cabos county, is below the crime rate of most bigger cities in the US!
Following the general rules of international travel avoiding drugs, dark alleys, and too much Dos Equis the only thing you will encounter in Los Cabos is one of the most stunningly beautiful places on earth.

Thank you for your email. I myself travel a lot and of course I would be afraid of flying in to a foreign country where I don’t speak the language and I don’t know nothing about.
I don’t mean to be disrespectful at all with the example I am going to give you, but this is the only way to explain what the drugs and street fights are all about. Take for example NY City before Giuliani, Miami and Los Angeles,now tell me, how many people get shot and how many people die every day because of drugs and drug wars between gangs? How many gangs are there in those cities?… but that doesn’t mean things like this happen in every city of the USA at all times. Does it?
Unfortunately, it’s the same thing here… only a few cities get affected, and we all (all of México) take the blame for it, HA!
I will be sending you a written format from our Tourism board, check it out and let me know your thoughts.

It’s easier to follow the crowd and panic; Be Smart! take the time to investigate, call your hotel, email friends that have traveled recently, get in touch with the locals of the city you are visiting and once you have evaluated the situation, make your decision. But make sure YOU made your own decision!

I live in the real Mexico, the friendly, folkloric and full color and taste country…and this is the country that your are going to enjoy in Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and many other cities that are far from the situations exposed on TV.
Thanks to tourism who visit every year Mexico, many people have a job and a salary and then this people don’t have to emigrate and try to get a better life out of this county. they are never going to lose their identity, families and culture….

I have been living in Cabo for 2 years now and I can surley say that is one of the must beutiful places to visit and very secure for sure!
